What Darkness Claims

Ed's wandering around looking for Sariel in particular, although anyone else he runs across is fine with him. He's carrying a cloth bag with him and he figures that the contents ought to make anyone he runs into fairly happy.

19th-Jul-2008 10:55 pm (UTC)
Sariel is currently sitting cross-legged on the floor, making a house out of playing cards.

It's not going very well.
19th-Jul-2008 10:58 pm (UTC)
"Well, I see you've managed to find something to keep yourself occupied." Ed eyes the cards and wonders how long until they give in to the effects of gravity.
19th-Jul-2008 11:03 pm (UTC)
Sariel doesn't look up, but instead attempts to balance two more cards. Success! Will he get to a third layer...? "It beats wandering around here aimlessly," he announces. "However, I have deduced that the playing cards are not edible. Well, they are edible, just not very filling. Or palatable."
19th-Jul-2008 11:13 pm (UTC)
"...You tried to eat paper." Ed wasn't entirely sure how amused he was allowed to be.
19th-Jul-2008 11:21 pm (UTC)
"Tried, succeeded, decided it wasn't a very good idea and won't be doing it again," Sariel clarified, about to place two more cards when the tower collapsed out from under them. "Damn it."
19th-Jul-2008 11:30 pm (UTC)
Ed just shakes his head.

"Remember when I said I live where lots of realities meet? Well, a lot of the inhabitants have access to nifty stuff. Like things that let us go popping from place to place." He looks innocent. "Anyway, was able to do a little research for you, although I don't know if it'd be telling you anything you don't know."
19th-Jul-2008 11:46 pm (UTC)
This got Sariel's attention. "Research? Really?" He glanced up at the other Ed, surprised. "What did you find?"
19th-Jul-2008 11:53 pm (UTC)
"Just some basic quick stuff. Ran a search for the term 'Earthborn' and only got a fiction book written on some planet or other and some pottery company," Ed explains as he pokes at the contents of his bag before withdrawing a printout. "Had better luck with your name though."
19th-Jul-2008 11:58 pm (UTC)
He scratches his head at the printout. "A lot of this makes no sense to me .. although the angel thing I knew about." Sariel looks slightly sheepish. "None of the others seem to either want to explain this 'Earthborn' business to me, or even know about it. That's what's frustrating."
20th-Jul-2008 12:04 am (UTC)
"Maybe you're getting used as an experiment to see how it works out? It would kind of figure," Ed says dryly before digging into the bag again and firing off a random piece of fruit at Sariel.
20th-Jul-2008 12:15 am (UTC)
Sariel catches the fruit purely on reflex, then looks at it. Realizing after a moment that it is an edible thing, he takes a bite out of it. "The most aggravating thing about punching angels is that they're too damn fast to actually hit," he says through his mouthful.
20th-Jul-2008 12:18 am (UTC)
Ed shrugs. "Wouldn't know about that since I've never had occasion to try."

He mulls something over. "Although I wonder... Hmm."
20th-Jul-2008 12:24 am (UTC)
Still with the mouth full. "Mmm? Wonder what?"
20th-Jul-2008 12:27 am (UTC)
"Just wondering how one would catch one and make it stick around long enough for whatever. Assuming it doesn't simply get pissed off enough to blast the catcher into little bitty bits. Because that would be... messy."
20th-Jul-2008 12:39 am (UTC)
"Catch what? One of those winged assholes? Who would want to, most of them are annoying stuck-up pricks anyway." Sariel tosses the unedible parts of the fruit over his shoulder. "They only ever show up when you don't want'em around, in my experience."
20th-Jul-2008 12:44 am (UTC)
"Oh, I don't actually want to. It was more an academic exercise than anything," Ed explains as he finally gets around to plopping his own behind on the floor.
20th-Jul-2008 12:49 am (UTC)
"Not worth the trouble," Sariel sniffed. He quirked an eyebrow at Ed. "So where did the fruit come from, or am I better off not knowing?"
20th-Jul-2008 12:53 am (UTC)
Ed blinks at him. "You completely missed the bit where I said that people living where my brother and I currently do tend to have stuff that let us go from place to place in favor of that printout, didn't you?"
20th-Jul-2008 12:57 am (UTC)
"No, of course not," Sariel lies through his teeth. "I was just hoping it had come from around here somewhere."
20th-Jul-2008 01:03 am (UTC)
"Uh-huh, sure. 'Fraid not. Brought it back with me along the papers." Ed looks briefly annoyed. "Stupid lack of computers... My going back to the apartment to use mine also served to make sure my own Alphonse knew I was perfectly fine though."
20th-Jul-2008 01:08 am (UTC)
"...what the hell's a computer?" Sariel put his palms on his knees. "Never heard that one, before."
20th-Jul-2008 01:15 am (UTC)
"I'd be surprised if you had, since we don't have them in Amestris. We're kind of... decades away from having the technology for them." Ed rubs at the back of his neck.

"Dunno when you're from, but at my point in the timeline, depending on how things go, we might see the earliest versions in about... forty years or so? I dunno. I'm guessing based on somewhere else's progress."
20th-Jul-2008 01:33 am (UTC)
"Uh... huh." That tells Sariel absolutely nothing of value, so he just kinda nods. "Right, I'll...keep a lookout for them, then."
20th-Jul-2008 01:42 am (UTC)
Ed sighs. "The kind I have is basically a rectangular box on it's side with a button that needs to be pushed to turn it on. There's also the monitor--which is the part where you'll see the actual information--, keyboard--that has more buttons; letters and numbers and crap--,and what's referred to as a mouse even though it doesn't look like one. Don't ask me why it's called that; I don't know. It's used for moving around the little arrow on the screen of the monitor to select things."
20th-Jul-2008 01:58 am (UTC)
Keys - Sariel latches on to a word he knows. "So.... it's like some kind of super-advanced typewriter?"
20th-Jul-2008 02:06 am (UTC)
Ed considers that. "Some people like to use theirs as one, I suppose. Although you can also play games and do other stuff on them if you want. And you need to get a printer and hook it up to the thing if you want anything on paper for whatever reason."

"I don't recommend putting your fist through the monitor if you manage to get pissed off with it though. Not unless you want to electrocute yourself."
20th-Jul-2008 02:48 am (UTC)
"I'll ... remember that. If I ever run across one. Being electrocuted is not a fun thing, at any rate." Winces involuntarily at that.
20th-Jul-2008 02:54 am (UTC)
"No kidding." Ed twitches. "I hate lightning."
20th-Jul-2008 03:02 am (UTC)
"Bad encounter?" Sariel is curious.
20th-Jul-2008 03:04 am (UTC)
"I got... very, very fried."
20th-Jul-2008 03:22 am (UTC)
"I can imagine. Lightning is not exactly friendly." Sariel rocks for a moment, then thinks about that. "Waitasec... how could you have been struck by lightning and still be alive?"
20th-Jul-2008 03:31 am (UTC)
Ed smiles thinly. "How, indeed."

He's going to let Sariel have a chance to figure that one out.
20th-Jul-2008 05:39 pm (UTC)
Sariel eyes him speculatively. "Does it have anything to do with your living in that really strange place?"
20th-Jul-2008 05:48 pm (UTC)
Ed shakes his head slowly. "Although there is something called the Anti-Violence Field covering a chunk of the place to keep the fights and random attacks down. No, I don't know how it works so don't ask."

Ed reconsiders. "Actually, it is related to my living there. In an indirect way."
20th-Jul-2008 06:01 pm (UTC)
Sariel nearly opens his mouth to ask about this 'anti-violence field,' but then shuts it, and instead waits to see if he gets any more of an explanation.
20th-Jul-2008 06:07 pm (UTC)
Ed gives up. "I'm a homunculus, okay? Blame a combination of that bitch and Envy. I moved to the Nexus to get away from them. Among others."
20th-Jul-2008 06:17 pm (UTC)
"You're a-" Sariel starts to move and is almost fully standing before his brain catches up to his reflexes. "I guess if you were an enemy, you wouldn't have told me," he says after a long moment.

Still, Sariel doesn't sit back down.
20th-Jul-2008 06:20 pm (UTC)
"I also wouldn't have done that bit of research for you and given you food," Ed points out quietly; staying seated so as to not present any obvious threat.
20th-Jul-2008 06:27 pm (UTC)
Sariel takes a deep breath and holds it for a moment, thinking. When he lets it out, it's a sigh as he drops back into a seated position. "Damn it," he mutters, warily eying Ed. "What did those bastards do to you?"
20th-Jul-2008 06:41 pm (UTC)
"Basically, she decided she didn't like being told 'no'. I'm not the only one of us to end up like this, by the way. The first two alts I met when I found the place I live? Both like me."

Ed rubs at his face tiredly. "At least Al is perfectly fine. Even if the only reason he is is because she wanted to have a way to make sure I kept in line."
20th-Jul-2008 06:54 pm (UTC)
Sariel bristles at that. "That bitch. I'd tear her throat out given the chance." He glowers down at the ground for a moment. "At least your Al is okay, though."
20th-Jul-2008 07:03 pm (UTC)
Ed smiles humorlessly. "We live right next door to a building full of people who don't like her and there's others scattered around. I've also been informed that if she even so much as pokes her nose in the place..."

Ed nods in agreement. "Although he finds the whole being physically younger than his mental age annoying though."
22nd-Jul-2008 06:16 pm (UTC)
Sariel blinks a moment. "Physically... younger? How young? My Al turned out right, but there's that other younger Al running around here too, so I'm getting the feeling I'm in the minority here."
22nd-Jul-2008 08:08 pm (UTC)
"Apparently, while the Gate was hanging onto mine, he didn't age and was spat back out as the same age as when he went in. So while up here," Ed taps his head "he's eighteen, he looks like he's about thirteen or so. I guess it's probably just as well that there isn't anyone in particular that he's interested in."
23rd-Jul-2008 08:53 pm (UTC)
"Ugh," Sariel groans. "There's another mental image I don't want. You're way too good at providing them."

23rd-Jul-2008 09:00 pm (UTC)
Ed couldn't help snickering a little. "I'm sorry? And it wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened with the other Al, so far as the physical age thing goes."
